A university may offer a programme academically, but international students still need to confirm that it is suitable for their intended immigration permission.
Ireland Study Requirements for International Students
Admission requirements differ by university and programme.
For undergraduate study, institutions normally assess the student’s secondary-school qualification, grades and subject background.
For postgraduate study, universities assess the previous Bachelor’s degree, academic results and whether the earlier qualification is relevant to the proposed Master’s programme.
English-language requirements are also set by the university.
The minimum English standard accepted for an Irish study visa is not necessarily the same as the English score required by the university. Irish Immigration specifically states that a college may set a different or higher English-language standard than the immigration minimum.

How to Apply to Study in Ireland from UAE
Most Irish institutions require international students to apply directly through the institution’s own application system.
The usual application sequence is:
- Shortlist the course and institution.
- Check academic and English-language entry requirements.
- Confirm that the programme is eligible for international student immigration where required.
- Submit academic transcripts, certificates, passport and other programme-specific documents.
- Receive and review the university offer.
- Pay the required deposit or tuition amount.
- Arrange accommodation.
- Prepare the Ireland student visa application if your nationality requires one.
Education in Ireland recommends arranging accommodation early because availability can be limited.
Ireland Student Visa from UAE
Students intending to study in Ireland for more than three months and who are from a visa-required nationality generally need a Long Stay D study visa.
Students applying from the UAE should first check whether their passport nationality requires an Irish visa. UAE residence alone does not determine this.
The long-stay study visa application includes documents such as the passport, photographs, application letter, university acceptance letter, evidence of fee payment, academic qualifications, English-language evidence, financial evidence and medical insurance.
An Irish long-stay study visa Letter of Acceptance must confirm full-time study involving at least 15 hours of organised daytime tuition each week.
That is one detail students should check on the admission documentation before submitting the visa file.
Ireland Student Visa Fees: How Much Tuition Must Be Paid First?
Irish Immigration has a very specific tuition-payment rule for long-stay study visas.
If your course costs less than €6,000, the tuition fee must be paid in full before applying for the visa. If the course costs more than €6,000, at least €6,000 must be paid before the visa application.
The university may still require a larger payment or full tuition even where immigration rules require only the minimum €6,000.
This distinction is important when planning admission deposits and visa finances from the UAE.
How Much Bank Balance Is Required for an Ireland Student Visa?
For an academic course lasting more than eight months, visa-required students must currently show immediate access to at least €10,000, in addition to course fees.
Students must also demonstrate access to at least another €10,000 for each subsequent year of study.
For programmes lasting eight months or less, the current requirement is €833 per month, up to €6,665.
Credit cards are not accepted as evidence of student finances.
Irish Immigration normally requires bank statements covering the previous six months, and large or unusual deposits must be explained.
The €10,000 figure should be treated as an immigration financial requirement, not automatically as a complete personal budget for tuition, rent and living expenses.
Ireland Student Visa Processing Time from UAE
The Embassy of Ireland in the UAE currently lists an approximate processing time of 4 to 8 weeks for study visas.
Irish Immigration also advises that processing can take longer where documents are missing or require additional verification.
Students should therefore avoid planning admission, accommodation and travel around the shortest possible visa-processing time.
Education in Ireland states that visa-required students can apply up to three months before their intended travel date.

These are official published ranges rather than guaranteed 2026/27 fees. Students should confirm the current tuition directly against the university offer before budgeting.
Accommodation should also be planned early, particularly in Dublin, where official Education in Ireland student guidance describes housing as competitive and advises students to start searching early.
Scholarships to Study in Ireland
Irish universities offer their own scholarships, and international students may also be eligible for the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES).
For 2026, the Government programme provides 60 scholarships for one year of full-time study at NFQ Level 9 or 10, meaning eligible Master’s, postgraduate diploma and PhD programmes.
The 2026 Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship is not a Bachelor’s scholarship. It is for NFQ Level 9 and 10 study.
Each award includes a €10,000 stipend plus a full tuition and registration-fee waiver for the scholarship year.
Applicants must already hold a conditional or final offer from an eligible Irish higher-education institution when applying. The 2026 call is now closed, but the conditions are useful for students planning future scholarship cycles.
Can International Students Work While Studying in Ireland?
Yes, eligible non-EEA students with a valid Stamp 2 permission can work while studying.
Students can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and up to 40 hours per week during designated holiday periods.
The 40-hour periods are specifically:
1 June to 30 September, and
15 December to 15 January.
A student normally needs a valid IRP showing Stamp 2 permission and a PPS Number to work.
Stamp 2 students cannot use their student permission for self-employment or running a business.
Post-Study Work in Ireland
Qualifying non-EEA graduates can use Ireland’s Third Level Graduate Programme, commonly associated with Stamp 1G.
An NFQ Level 8 graduate can receive up to 12 months under the programme.
A graduate with an NFQ Level 9 qualification or higher receives 12 months initially and may obtain a further 12 months if the programme conditions are met, including showing appropriate steps toward graduate-level employment.
So the common phrase “Ireland gives every graduate a two-year post-study visa” is not accurate.
The two-year possibility applies to qualifying Level 9-or-higher graduates and the second year is subject to renewal conditions.
Graduates must also apply within six months of being formally notified that they have achieved their award.
Can You Get PR in Ireland After Studying?
Studying in Ireland does not automatically lead to permanent residence.
Ireland’s current Long Term Residency scheme is based on qualifying residence linked to employment permits.
Stamp 2 student permission and Stamp 1G under student-graduate conditions do not count toward the 60 months required for Ireland’s Long Term Residency scheme.
A graduate may move from Stamp 1G into eligible employment and later build qualifying residence through an employment-permit route.
This is more accurate than describing the student visa itself as a direct PR pathway.
