Students intending to study in Ireland for more than three months and who hold a visa-required nationality normally apply for a Long Stay D study visa. The application can be made from the student’s home country or another country where the student is legally resident, allowing eligible UAE residents to apply from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or elsewhere in the UAE.

Irish Immigration reviews each application individually. The application should clearly show the student’s course, academic background, English ability, tuition payment, available funds, sponsor details, medical insurance and previous immigration history.

The Ireland student visa application starts online through AVATS – the Automated Visa Application and Tracking System. After completing AVATS, the student prepares the required documents and follows the submission instructions shown on the application.

1. Receive the required Letter of Acceptance from the Irish education provider.
2. Pay the tuition amount required before the visa application.
3. Prepare academic, English-language, financial, sponsor and medical-insurance documents.
4. Complete the Ireland visa application online through AVATS.
5. Answer the AVATS questions fully and make sure the information matches the documents being submitted.
6. Print, sign and date the AVATS Summary Application Form.
7. Complete the required Summary of Finances for the Long Stay study visa.
8. Book the Ireland VFS appointment in the UAE if required by the AVATS instructions.
9. Submit the passport and required visa documents at the Visa Application Centre.
10. Track the application until the passport and visa decision are returned.

The Long Stay D visa is decided on the complete application, not on the university offer alone. The documents should confirm the student’s identity, course admission, academic history, finances and legal residence in the UAE.

For a Long Stay Irish visa, the current passport should remain valid for at least 12 months after the planned date of arrival in Ireland.

Irish Immigration also asks applicants to provide copies of pages from previous passports if available. Previous travel, visas and immigration history can therefore be reviewed as part of the visa application.

Two recent passport-sized colour photographs are also required. The Visa Application Transaction Number generated through AVATS is written on the back together with the applicant’s signature as required by the Irish visa photograph instructions.

The Letter of Acceptance confirms that the student has been admitted to an eligible course in Ireland. It needs to contain more information than a basic offer email.

For the Long Stay study visa, the acceptance letter should confirm:

• that the student has been accepted and enrolled on a full-time course
• that the course involves at least 15 hours of organised daytime tuition each week
• the name and details of the course
• the total tuition fees payable
• the amount of tuition already paid
• medical insurance arrangements if the college has arranged insurance for the student

The Ireland student visa application letter should explain why the student chose Ireland, why they selected the course and how it connects with their previous studies or career plans. It is different from a university Statement of Purpose because it is written specifically for the visa application.

The letter should clearly include:

• The applicant’s full name and postal address
• Why the applicant wants to study in Ireland
• Why the selected course fits the applicant’s education and professional goals
• A clear explanation if the new course is a major change from the applicant’s previous studies or employment
• Documents explaining a course or career change if needed
• The planned dates of arrival and departure
• Details of family members currently living in Ireland or another EU country if this applies

The application letter also confirms that the student intends to:

• Comply with the conditions attached to the Irish visa and immigration permission
• Support themselves without becoming financially dependent on Irish public services
• Leave Ireland before the immigration permission expires unless a further lawful permission has been obtained

The amount of tuition paid before applying depends on the total course fee.

€6,000 is the immigration minimum for a course above that value. An Irish university or college can require a larger deposit or full payment under its own fee policy.

For a course lasting more than eight months, the current Ireland student finance requirement is access to at least €10,000 for living expenses. This amount is separate from tuition fees.

The student and/or sponsor must also show access to at least another €10,000 for each subsequent year of study, in addition to the tuition fees for those years.

For a course lasting eight months or less, the current requirement is €833 for each month of the stay, up to the published maximum of €6,665.

Irish Immigration looks at the source of the funds and the six-month transaction history, not just the closing bank balance.

Financial documents normally include:

• An up-to-date bank statement covering the previous six months
• The account holder’s name and address
• Account number and account type
• Money entering and leaving the account during the six-month period
• An explanation and documents for large or irregular deposits
• Confirmation that money held in a deposit or savings account can be withdrawn
• Documents for student loans, property sales, transferred savings or other significant sources of money

Yes. Parents, family members or another accepted sponsor can contribute towards the student’s tuition and living expenses.

If a parent or another person is sponsoring the student, the application should clearly show:

• Who is sponsoring the student
• The sponsor’s relationship to the student
• Documents confirming that relationship
• How much financial support will be provided
• The sponsor’s six-month bank history
• The sponsor’s employment, salary or business income
• That the sponsor can fund the student’s studies while continuing to meet their own financial commitments

For an employed sponsor, documents may include an employer letter and recent payslips. A self-employed sponsor or business owner can provide company and financial records showing the source of their regular income.

The English score required by the university and the minimum English evidence accepted for an Ireland study visa are separate requirements.

During AVATS, students applying for a study visa are asked about their English-language ability and any recognised English qualification they hold. The visa documents must include the required English test evidence when requested.

An Irish university may set a higher English score for admission than the minimum accepted for immigration. Students must therefore meet the English requirement set by their chosen university or college as well as the visa requirement.

Private medical insurance is required for students coming to Ireland under the student immigration system.

The Irish education provider may arrange medical insurance as part of the student’s enrolment. If the college provides the insurance, the Letter of Acceptance should record the arrangement.

If the institution does not provide insurance, the student needs to arrange suitable private medical cover and include the required proof with the visa application and later immigration registration in Ireland.

Irish Immigration has specific rules for the format of documents submitted with a visa application.

• Original documents are required unless the official instructions state that a copy is acceptable.
• Documents that are not in English or Irish require a full certified translation.
• The original foreign-language document is submitted together with its certified translation.
• Documents cannot be supplied through USB drives, memory cards or CD-ROMs.
• File-sharing links such as Dropbox or similar online folders are not accepted in place of the required hardcopy documents.

Letters issued by universities, employers, companies or other organisations should also contain enough official contact information for the Irish authorities to verify them.

Previous visa refusals must be disclosed when applying for an Ireland student visa. This includes refusals issued by countries other than Ireland.

Irish Immigration requires the applicant to provide details of the refusal and the original refusal letter issued by the authority that made the decision.

Ireland’s current mandatory fingerprint rule is based on the country where the visa applicant is resident.

Irish Immigration currently requires visa applicants resident in China, Hong Kong, India, Nigeria or Pakistan to provide fingerprints with each Irish visa application, subject to the listed exemptions.

A student legally resident in the UAE should follow the biometric and submission instructions provided for applications made in the UAE. Holding an Indian or Pakistani passport does not by itself mean that the residency-based fingerprint requirement for applications submitted in India or Pakistan applies to an application made from the UAE.

VFS handles the application-submission process. The Irish authorities make the decision on the student visa.

VFS Ireland UAE currently states that student visa applications are usually processed within one month. Processing can take longer during peak student-visa periods or if the Irish authorities request more documents or need to carry out additional checks.

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs advises visa applicants to allow as much time as possible and to plan well ahead of travel in case further enquiries are needed.

An Irish visa gives permission to travel to Ireland. It does not by itself guarantee entry into the country.

At border control, students should be ready to explain why they are travelling to Ireland and may be asked to show documents such as:

• Evidence of tuition payment
• Bank statements or other proof of available funds
• Private medical insurance
• Accommodation details

Irish Immigration advises applicants not to purchase travel tickets before the visa outcome is known.

Non-EEA students staying in Ireland for more than 90 days must register their immigration permission after arrival.

First-time registration is booked after arrival through the Irish Immigration Customer Service system. The student attends the registration office with the documents required for their student permission.

The standard registration fee is currently €300 if the fee applies. After successful registration, the student receives an Irish Residence Permit, commonly called the IRP card.

Full-time higher-education students who meet the required conditions are generally registered under the appropriate student permission, such as Stamp 2.

If an Ireland student visa is refused, the applicant receives a refusal letter explaining why the application was not approved.

If the refusal decision allows an appeal, the appeal must be submitted within two months of the date on the refusal letter.

Ireland does not charge a fee for a permitted visa appeal. The appeal should address each reason given for refusal and include any additional documents needed to answer those points.
