UAE Student Visa (Student Residence Visa)

The UAE student visa is officially called a student residence visa (إقامة طالب). It is issued for 12 months and must be renewed annually for the duration of the programme. Non-GCC nationals studying at an accredited UAE university require this visa. GCC nationals (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar) can study without a separate student visa.

UAE Student Visa Requirements

The sponsoring university processes the visa application through GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs) or ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security). Students do not apply directly to immigration authorities.

Documents Required for UAE Student Visa

Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity. Passport-sized photographs (white background, UAE standard). University admission letter or confirmed offer. Proof of tuition fee payment or deposit receipt. Bank statements showing financial capacity. High school or university transcripts (attested). Medical fitness test results (conducted at a UAE government-approved centre after arrival). Health insurance coverage for the visa duration.

UAE Student Visa Processing Time

The entry permit takes 14 working days on normal track or 7–10 working days on express track. After arrival, the medical test, Emirates ID enrolment, and residence visa stamping take an additional 1–2 weeks. Total processing time from application to visa in hand is approximately 3–5 weeks.

UAE Student Visa Under 18

Students under 18 can study in the UAE under the sponsorship of a UAE-resident parent or under university sponsorship with parental consent documentation. Expatriate residents can sponsor male children up to age 25 and female children regardless of age (until married), provided the child is enrolled at a recognised educational institution.

Working on a UAE Student Visa

Students on a university-sponsored visa can work up to 15 hours per week during term time with a MOHRE work permit. During official university holidays, additional hours may be permitted with university and MOHRE approval.
